Bernoulli's Equation
GATE 2014
Medium

An incompressible fluid is flowing through a contraction section of length L and has a 1-D (x-direction) steady state velocity distribution, u=u0(1+2x/L). If u0=2 m/s and L=3 m, the convective acceleration (in m/s²) of the fluid at x=L is _____

8 m/s²(± 0.05 accepted)

Explanation

Convective acceleration = u·(du/dx). du/dx=u0·(2/L)=2×2/3=1.333 s⁻¹ (constant). At x=L: u(L)=u0(1+2)=3u0=6 m/s. Acceleration=6×1.333=8.0 m/s².
