For the same parallel-reaction CSTR system (A→R, rR=k1CA², k1=0.5 m³/mol-s; A→S, rS=k2CA, k2=1 s⁻¹; CA0=30, CS0=1 mol/m³), what is the % conversion of A, to the nearest integer, so that the concentration of S in the exit stream is 11.8 mol/m³?
90 %(± 2 accepted)
Explanation
S balance: CS−CS0=τ·k2CA ⟹ 11.8−1=10.8=τ·CA. A balance: CA0−CA=τ(k1CA²+k2CA)=τCA(k1CA+k2)=10.8(0.5CA+1). So 30−CA=5.4CA+10.8 ⟹ 19.2=6.4CA ⟹ CA=3 mol/m³. X=1−CA/CA0=1−3/30=0.9=90%.
