Fluid Mechanics
Flow Through Pipes
GATE 2012
Medium
A Newtonian fluid of viscosity μ flows between two parallel plates due to the motion of the bottom plate, which is moved with a velocity V. The top plate is stationary, and the gap between the plates is b. The steady, laminar velocity profile in the x-direction is
- AV[y/b]
- BV[(y/b)²−1]
- CV[1−(y/b)²]
- V[1−y/b]
Explanation
Planar Couette flow with no pressure gradient gives a linear velocity profile between the bottom (moving at V, y=0) and top (stationary, y=b) plates: u(y)=V(1−y/b).
