Bernoulli's Equation
GATE 2011
Medium
Consider two cases of particle movement: In Case I, a particle moves along the positive y-direction (gravity acts along positive y). In Case II, a particle moves along the negative y-direction (gravity still acts along positive y). Which ONE of the following options corresponds to the CORRECT directions of buoyancy acting on the particles?
- APositive y-direction for both cases
- BNegative y-direction for Case I, positive y-direction for Case II
- Negative y-direction for both cases
- DPositive y-direction for Case I, negative y-direction for Case II
Explanation
Buoyancy force (Archimedes' principle) always acts directly opposite to the direction of gravity, regardless of the particle's own direction of motion. Since gravity acts along +y in both cases, buoyancy acts along −y in BOTH cases.
