Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium
GATE 2010
Medium

An equimolar liquid mixture of species 1 and 2 is in equilibrium with its vapour at 400K. At this temperature, the vapour pressures are P1sat=180kPa and P2sat=120kPa. Assuming that Raoult's law is valid, the value of y1 is

  • A0.30
  • B0.41
  • C0.50
  • 0.60

Explanation

x1=x2=0.5. P=x1P1sat+x2P2sat=0.5×180+0.5×120=150kPa. y1=x1P1sat/P=0.5×180/150=0.6.
