Match each of the following techniques of polymerization in Group I with the corresponding process characteristics in Group II: P. Bulk, Q. Solution, R. Suspension, S. Emulsion — I. Polymer with very high molecular weight can be obtained, II. Heat removal is crucial but very difficult, III. Small amount of undesired low molecular weight polymer is formed, IV. Polymer concentration in the product stream is low
- AP-I, Q-II, R-III, S-IV
- P-II, Q-IV, R-III, S-I
- CP-II, Q-III, R-IV, S-I
- DP-II, Q-III, R-I, S-IV
Explanation
Bulk polymerization has notoriously poor heat removal since there's no diluent to absorb heat (P-II). Solution polymerization dilutes the polymer in solvent, giving low product concentration (Q-IV). Suspension polymerization, forming small independent droplets, tends to leave a small amount of undesired low-MW polymer (R-III). Emulsion polymerization's compartmentalization effect uniquely allows both fast rate and very high molecular weight simultaneously (S-I).
