Hard

The products of combustion of methane in atmospheric air (21% O2 and 79% N2) have the following dry-basis composition: CO2 10.00 mol%, O2 2.37 mol%, CO 0.53 mol%, N2 87.10 mol%. The ratio of the moles of CH4 to the moles of O2 in the feed stream is

  • A1.05
  • B0.60
  • C0.51
  • 0.45

Explanation

Basis 100 mol dry product gas. Air fed=N2/0.79=87.10/0.79=110.25mol, so O2 fed (in air)=0.21×110.25=23.15mol. Carbon balance: CH4 fed=CO2+CO=10+0.53=10.53mol. Ratio CH4/O2=10.53/23.15≈0.45.
