Medium

For a homogeneous reaction system, where Cj is the concentration of j at time t, Nj is the number of moles of j at time t, V is the reaction volume at time t, and t is the reaction time, the rate of reaction for species j is defined as

  • AdCj/dt
  • B−(dCj/dt)
  • (1/V)(dNj/dt)
  • D−(1/V)(dNj/dt)

Explanation

The general definition of the rate of formation of species j, valid even for variable-volume systems, is rj=(1/V)(dNj/dt). It is naturally negative for reactants (Nj decreasing) and positive for products, without needing a forced sign convention.
