Ideal Reactor Design
GATE 2009
Hard
A plug flow reactor of the same volume (as the CSTR above, k=0.4(gmol/liter)^0.5.min⁻¹) is added in series after the existing CSTR (exit concentration 4.0 gmol/liter). The concentration of A (in gmol/liter) at the exit of the plug flow reactor is
- A0.5
- 1.0
- C2.0
- D2.5
Explanation
PFR design equation for half-order kinetics: integrating dCA/dτ=−k·CA^0.5 gives 2√CA=2√CA,in−kτ. With CA,in=4 (CSTR's exit), τ=5 (same volume as CSTR): 2√CA=2×2−0.4×5=4−2=2 ⟹ √CA=1 ⟹ CA=1.0.
