Medium
The liquid-phase reaction A→B+C is conducted isothermally at 50°C in a CSTR. The inlet concentration of A is 8.0 gmol/liter. At a space time of 5 minutes, the concentration of A at the exit of the CSTR is 4.0 gmol/liter. The kinetics are −rA=k·CA^0.5 gmol/liter.min. The rate constant (k) for this reaction at 50°C is
- A0.2(gmol/liter)^0.5.min⁻¹
- B0.2(liter/gmol)^0.5.min⁻¹
- 0.4(gmol/liter)^0.5.min⁻¹
- D0.4(liter/gmol)^0.5.min⁻¹
Explanation
τ=(CA0−CA)/(k·CA^0.5) ⟹ 5=(8−4)/(k×√4)=4/(2k) ⟹ k=4/10=0.4. Units: since rate=k·CA^0.5, k has units (gmol/liter)^0.5·min⁻¹.
