GATE 2009
Medium
A slab of thickness L, with one side (x=0) insulated and the other side (x=L) maintained at a constant temperature T0, has a uniformly distributed internal heat source producing heat at rate S W/m³. Assuming steady, 1-D conduction along x, the maximum temperature in the slab occurs at x equal to
- 0
- BL/4
- CL/2
- DL
Explanation
An insulated boundary has zero heat flux, i.e. zero temperature gradient. With uniform heat generation, the temperature profile is a downward parabola whose maximum (zero-gradient point) must occur exactly at the insulated boundary, x=0.
