Bernoulli's Equation
GATE 2009
Hard
A free jet of water emerges from a nozzle (diameter 75mm) attached to a pipe (diameter 225mm). The nozzle tip is 0.5m above point B in the pipe. Point A lies on the jet's trajectory, 21m above the nozzle tip. The velocity of water at point A is 18m/s. Neglecting friction, g=9.81m/s², density of water=1000kg/m³, the velocity of water at the tip of the nozzle (in m/s) is
- A13.4
- B18.0
- C23.2
- 27.1
Explanation
Along the free jet (atmospheric pressure throughout, only gravity acts): Vnozzle²=VA²+2gΔz=18²+2×9.81×21=324+411.82=735.82. Vnozzle=√735.82≈27.1 m/s.
